Hello, I would just like to take this chance to introduce myself and tell you a little about what I hope for this blog to portray.
My name is Melanie Kadebe Doran. I am a 34 year old, divorced, single mother of 2 teenagers who is tired of being in the rat race of outside employment. I have lived pay check to pay check for my entire 18 years of employment and have slowly watched my enthusiasm and zest for life slip away in the constant drudgery of bill payments that never seem to go away. I have pulled myself up from being a highschool dropout to completing high school and 2 years of community college in small business management and multimedia. I have prided myself on the fact that I am continually trying to better myself. But, no matter, I still seem to be running into brick walls in the professional world. I either have too much education or not enough. I have too much experience or not enough. I know what I can do. Can I have a chance to show anyone? Most of the businesses I have had on my resume are no longer in business themselves. I know that is scary and I often wonder why I still want to be self employed, but the fact of the matter is I have a passion for business. I am the woman reading the "How to..." business books on the bus beside the people reading the cheesy romance novels or the "horror" stories. I spend countless hours online researching and finding out about any and every business opportunity out there. But it is definitely hard when you have tons of business ideas and not a penny to spare.
So, what must one do to resolve this conundrum? That is now my quest. I am hoping to have this blog to share with other devoted business adventurers who are in the same situation as I am, so we can help each other reach our goals of personal and financial success.
Pros and cons of being self employed. We have all heard them. Pros: no more time and money wasted on transportation. If you come from a big city like Toronto, as I do you are well aware of the frustrations and time consumption that entails. I have recently moved to a small town called Belleville about an hour and fifteen minutes from the big city. I can drive from here to T.O. in the time it takes to get from one end of the city to the other by public transportation. My mother who used to drive from one end of the city to the other, knows well the costs involved . $20 a day to park!!! Ouch. Then what? Worrying whether or not someone may decide today is a great day to steal your car or smash into it and then leave the scene of the accident. Or some unruly teens who decide that graffiti on your car is cool. The list goes on.
Next, no more working hours as per the employer requirement. I worked in a Call Centre environment for over two years. A Call Centre is open twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week. I forgot what a weekend was. I had day shifts, nights shifts, and afternoon shifts rotated enough to wreck havoc on your biological clock. I had two days off during the week together, I had a day off here and and a day off three days later, I had ten days straight and then three days off. You name it I had it. Alot of people may take advantage of the fact they can stay at home and make their own schedule, then find out a few months later the lack of a schedule is even worse. But there is a proper way to set up your own schedule, and yes, it is up to you to be responsible enough to keep it. Now, most people do find though for the first year of their own business they work seven days a week, but the pride and psychological benefits of it(not to mention the financial aspects) make it worth the effort. Who wants to work seven days a week for someone else's benefit?
And lastly, my foremost, and most favored argument. The tax benefits of being self employed. If you run a business from your home you can deduct half your rent! All products and supplies, covered. Sure you need to make money, but you can't benefit from working for an employer outside your home in any way like this.
